On the morning of February 13, 1917 a surprised Mata Hari was arrested in her room at the Plaza Hotel Athénée. By that evening she was entering the gates of Saint-Lazare. The prisoner was first placed in solitary confinement under 24 hour supervision, but soon became ill and was sent to the prison infirmary.

Saint-Lazare prison Places Map The present square includes the chapel of the Saint-Lazare prison. It started as a leper colony run by monks in the 17th century and then as a special prison for the well-to-do. 165 prisoners were executed here over the three days before Robespierre's arrest on 27 July 1794 at the height of the terror.

Only the prison infirmary and chapel (built by Louis-Pierre Baltard in 1834) remain of the prison, with the latter to be seen in the square Alban-Satragne (107, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis) in the 10th arrondissement. The surviving remains of the Saint-Lazare prison were inscribed on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments in November.

High profile incarcerations of society women in Paris, especially for crimes like murder, highlighted the sensational reputation of Saint-Lazare prison. One such scandal at the dawn of the twentieth century involved Marguerite-Jeanne Steinheil (b. 1869 d. 1954). Steinheil was the wife of the artist Adolphe Steinheil whom she married in 1890.
