The SS Empress of Japan Figurehead is a colourful monument in Stanley Park. It was also called the "Queen of the Pacific"and was built in Barrow-in-Furness in the UK. It crossed the Pacific Ocean over 400 times trading between Canada and the Orient for thirty one years 1891 - 1922. The figurehead was saved as it was deteriorating and was restored.

Empress of Japan, ship's figurehead, Stanley Park seawall, Vancouver
The Empress of Japan sailed between Vancouver and the Orient between 1891 and 1922. The original figurehead was saved by the Vancouver Daily Province and presented to the Park Board in 1928. In 1960 the badly deteriorated original was replaced with a fiberglass original .

You can see for yourself on Google—or visit the (almost) real thing in Stanley Park, where the first Empress of Japan's figurehead has been on display for over a century. I say 'almost' because the current figurehead is a fibreglass replica. The wooden original had begun to rot years ago has since been restored and is in the Vancouver.
